Vintage Barbie dolls from the early years sell at auction for huge amounts, the original cost of Barbie in 1959 was $3.00 a mint boxed Barbie from that year sold for $3552.50 on an auction site in 2004.

In 2006 a Barbie doll set a world record, selling at auction for £9,000, the doll was from 1965 and was "Barbie in midnight red " and was from a collector who owned 4,000 Barbie dolls.

A colour tier system has been introduced for the collectors edition Barbie dolls , pink, silver, gold and platinum depending on how many of the dolls are produced .

In more recent years the maker of Barbie, Mattel, designed and sold a wide range of Barbie dolls aimed specifically at collectors. The range includes porcelain versions, vintage reproductions and Barbie as a range of characters from televison series such as the Munsters and Star Trek.

There are also dolls depicting Barbie with different ethnic identities and styles.

Barbie will celebrate her 50th anniversary in 2009, and Mattel plans a new reproduction of the original 1959 Barbie doll.
